Tagging is just another word for organising your book marks. So if you have a large range on a multitude of topics, then tagging is a good idea. Probably a good idea any way, and a good habit to get into. Social bookmarking allows you that any-where, any-time access. So for example if you are at the University and you find a good site you can instantly book mark it, rather than writing it down and rewriting it later on your own computer. Urls with long strings are really easy to social bookmark to avoid dropping any of the letters. Social bookmarking is a way to create order in web resources that are used in curriculum departments, syndicates or among learning communities. The order allows the user/s to access information quickly by clicking onto the tags which are relevant to the search requirements without having to do the leg work.
Why Students Would Use Bookmarking
Technology which is social and collaborative and allows our students to communicate and connect with one another is a sure way inwhich students will engage in its use. When surveying students about the use of tagging and why they'd use it they said
..."it's cool and you can tag in your own speak that your friends know and will pick up on quickly"
..."you might not necessarily use it all the time but as long as you know how to if need be, this is important"
..."tagging is such a hip and cool thing to be doing-when you have great info, or music or videos to watch you can just tag them and text a friend to let them know. But no doubt if they are looking or interested they'll find your tag on the social bookmarking anyway."
With the students in teaching learning situations....... If you have a class log in eg Room 73 with the password room 73, then if the students or teacher find relevant sites at home or while searching at school they can book mark them to their class site. Sharing the learning, valuing the contributions the chn may bring to the experience. Really easy to share with other learners.
If as a teacher you have 3 good sites that you want the students to use on a pod of laptops, or on a number of laptops, social bookmarking saves the teacher loading the sites on all the computers.
